BCS gearshift "quadrant" adjustment
Does your BCS have a slight gear grinding noise when pushing the tractor in neutral? This is because the "quadrant" (the plate with the gearshift decal on it) is out of adjustment. Watch this video to see how to correct this...

Joel at Earth Tools shows how to swap the forward & reverse cable positions on a BCS 770 or 779 walking tractor, to convert the forward/reverse lever on the machine to a "normally mowing/Front-PTO" orientation. NOTES: #1. Joel mentions in the video that this swap also works on the model 660, but since the 660 is a "front-PTO ONLY" tractor, you would never want to do this cable swap on that mode...

I just bought a used 749 and your example helped me so much. The drum stuck on and the brake lever was seized and not moving freely. It was good to learn how to free those up. I ended up putting the lever in a vise and with penetrating oil managed to tap it back and forth until it broke free. It took about 30 minutes to work in enough oil to get it moving freely again. The needle-nose pliers and screwdriver example was exactly what was needed to get those springs back into place (and I still learned some new swear words). Great job!

Good vid. However, since the edge of the valve/rocker compartment is sharp edges and the jam & adjusting nuts are often almost seized together, it is a good idea to use a socket & ratchet to loosen the jam nut to place your hand further away from the compartment so that u can't accidentally bang & slice open your hand as can occur when using a 10mm wrench.

The Dewit half moon hoe looks great. When attaching the hard ash handle using the supplied screw, the screw stripped even though I was being as careful as I could be. I finally found an Everbuilt #8 x 3/4" round head phillips zinc wood screw at a big box store. I couldn't find a stainless screw but was leaning in that direction even though they are weaker. While inserting the new screw, the screw broke off inside the handle. I think I will use it without a screw for now as it seems firmly attached without one. If the handle does come off, I'll drill out the old screw and try again. I do recommend drilling a pilot hole on those Dewit handles.

Is there anything else that could trigger the wrapper? I checked the lever dealy and it slides fine. Ours prematurely wraps and doesn't shut off until pulling the lever manually. Its an intermittent but debilitating problem!

I think the correct German name for that tool is a 'Karst'. It's used in vineyards which are very rocky and narrow between the rows to airate and plant new plants. Great tool, as you said mostly for rocky ground. For softer grounds there are 'Haue' which are the same tool, but with a narrow spade instead of forks. Great for turning ground and planting.

    - There was a trailer drawbar device on '?? New inventors? or something in Australia (ABC) 20 odd years ago with a"jointed drawbar" - ie, just -sort of - like yours. To reverse the trailer straight, or around a corner, it took the same inputs as simply backing the car, Their system used 2 gas struts pushing off the rear bumper of the car (or a bar connected to the sides of the trailer hitch, operation the same, add a link, reverse the steering input needed..

You use the large muscles of your legs and your body weight to leverage the broad fork. You use weaker, although not necessarily weak, upper body muscles for the swing fork, plus the shock of that fork hitting the ground is transferred to your upper body. It’s a lot more work, which you may not realize when you are younger. Years from now you will realize the difference. I’m 78 and can still use a broad fork with ease. Swinging a tool into the ground/wood repeatedly will quickly give me a very sore back and shoulders. Why I went a hydraulic log splitter and retired the splitting mail years ago.

  • @floydblandston108

When I was young, we used the swing fork to open potato hills and carrot beds and the like, working across the bed then pulling it to you. In our wet, stony ground it worked much better than the conventional 'digging fork', which was inclined to plug and harder to sink in. I'll happily attest to the excellence of the hand tools I've bought from you- *much* better than anything available to me locally, and well worth the cost- they are 'heirloom quality'.

This tool is not used in europe in flat terrain. It is used to push the hay downhill to the point where you can pick it up with a tractor. This is old tool, replaced by hayrakes, like for example Lavrih AlpFlow. But these are much more expensive and used farmers with alot of steep slopes.

Excellent video. Similar tools, but different. I know the video you're referencing by Curtis Stone, ruclips.net/video/Js0MXh4PoRY/видео.html&t and to be fair, he has a unique situation where the PDR tool works great for him. Curtis only uses one implement on the BCS and because of that he has removed the quick coupler which changes the weight distribution. For his situation, he essentially created a multi-tool which speeds up his work. If you are able to have both tools I think that's great, but if you could only have one, I think you'd have to go with the tiller and roller (either the earth tools one or the PDR).
